"I am 31, and a young professional, and as one of the youngest candidates in this race, I hope to bring a fresh perspective to our city council. I, like many Portlanders, am a renter, and I know the burden of increased housing costs and the challenges to buying a home in Portland, intimately. I am running for City Council to help ensure that our city has a sustainable long-term future, and continues to be a place where young people feel like they can make a home."
First generation college student, union organizer, teacher and educational equity advocate, passionate
After graduating from Willamette University, Soren became a Middle School English teacher in Memphis, TN, serving as an Americorps member through Teach for America. After serving as a teacher, Soren worked as a professional Health IT educator at Epic systems.
Soren continues to be a passionate advocate for equitable educational opportunity, and for fair and competitive teacher compensation.
In 2023 Soren served on the Organizing Committee that led a successful, remote, union organization vote for the findhelp Solidarity Network, associated with OPEIU's Local 1010, one of the world's first tech unions.
While living in Memphis, Soren was on the leadership committee for 9-0-ONE, a community organizing group focused on advocating for educational equity initiatives.
Over the last 5 years, Soren has developed an in-depth knowledge of the medical and social care systems through his work with dozens of healthcare institutions throughout the country.
Soren works, both personally and professionally, to ensure that all people have access to the quality health and social care that they need, and to address the system inequities that create barriers to high-quality care.
Since Soren was 12, he has been dedicated to making the world a better place, and serving his community. Whether it was as a volunteer referee at a youth soccer game, serving as a chess coach for local middle schools, working as a poll worker, or helping to repack food at the Oregon Food Bank, he strives to have a wider positive impact on others.
